Joe Murphy serves as a Tribal Council Member of the Pechanga Band of Indians. This is his first term on the Tribal Council, having been elected in July, 2022. Prior to being on Tribal Council, Mr. Murphy served on the Tribe’s Constitution and Bylaws committee, and the Election Board for the 2016 General Election. He is also a member of the University Council at California State University San Marcos.
Mr. Murphy has worked in multiple departments at Pechanga Resort and Casino through the Tribal Internship Program such as Table Games, Human Resources, and Slots. He was working as a Compliance Agent for the Pechanga Gaming Commission when he decided to go back to school to study business. Mr. Murphy obtained two Associate’s degrees from MiraCosta College in Oceanside, California, before transferring to California State University San Marcos where he earned his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with an emphasis in Management Information Systems; he also minored in Economics. During his senior year Mr. Murphy interned with former Pechanga Tribal Treasurer, Robyn Delfino.
Prior to his service on Tribal Council, Mr. Murphy owned a restaurant in Costa Rica, travelled to 22 countries spanning four continents, and worked in the fitness industry as a CrossFit coach for four years. He is an avid snowboarder and surfer.
Mr. Murphy’s father, Russell “Butch” Murphy, served on Tribal Council for 20 years until his retirement in 2022.
